National Manufacturing Day UK: Celebrating innovation and industry
On 26 September, the UK will mark National Manufacturing Day, a celebration of the nation’s dynamic manufacturing sector and the innovation, skills, and craftsmanship that drive its growth. This event provides a platform for manufacturers, workers and the wider public to connect, learn and reflect on the pivotal role the industry plays in shaping the economy and future of the country.
Why celebrate National Manufacturing Day?
The manufacturing industry is at the heart of the UK’s economy, contributing £192 billion annually and supporting 2.5 million jobs. It is a cornerstone of productivity, innovation, and regional development, with the sector spanning a wide range of fields such as automotive, aerospace, pharmaceuticals and green technologies. National Manufacturing Day shines a spotlight on these achievements while offering opportunities to address challenges and foster new growth.
Our strategic partner, Make UK, the voice of UK manufacturing, is spearheading this campaign once more, and working with the Government to ensure that details of the companies taking part in National Manufacturing Day will be circulated to every jobcentre across the UK and into all of our schools. They will be demonstrating the value of a manufacturing apprenticeship as an alternative route post school/college, and promoting these opportunities to women and other minority groups, helping to attract new talent for businesses looking to develop their future skills pipeline.
What to expect
The day is packed with activities designed to engage the public and industry professionals alike. Manufacturers across the UK will open their doors to offer factory tours, hands-on demonstrations, and workshops aimed at educating and inspiring the next generation of workers. It’s a chance to see the technology and craftsmanship behind everyday products and gain a deeper understanding of what goes into making the UK a global manufacturing leader.
- Factory tours and open days
Manufacturers across the country invite students, job seekers, and the general public into their facilities. Visitors can experience real-time production, meet skilled professionals, and learn about the various career paths available in the sector.
- Virtual events
Many companies will host online seminars, webinars, and virtual factory tours. This makes the day accessible to a wider audience, allowing people from different regions to participate.
- Skills and job showcases
As the manufacturing industry faces an evolving skills gap, the day will highlight key job roles in engineering, design, and technology, encouraging more young people to consider a future in manufacturing.
Promoting sustainability in manufacturing
One of the key themes this year is ‘sustainability’. As the world moves towards greener practices, UK manufacturers are at the forefront of developing sustainable processes and innovations. The government’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 has set the stage for a transformation in manufacturing, pushing companies to reduce waste, adopt renewable energy, and develop eco-friendly products.
National Manufacturing Day will emphasise how the sector is responding to environmental challenges and shaping a sustainable future. Initiatives such as green manufacturing technologies and the push towards circular economies will be a focus of many events, showcasing how the sector is evolving in response to global demands.
Inspiring the next generation
Attracting young talent is critical for the future of UK manufacturing. National Manufacturing Day serves as a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between education and industry by encouraging students to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). By providing an insider’s look at the industry, manufacturers aim to spark curiosity and enthusiasm among young people.
The day also encourages collaboration between educational institutions and manufacturing companies, with a focus on creating new apprenticeships, internships, and training programmes. Many businesses will showcase the exciting, cutting-edge roles that young people can aspire to, ranging from robotics engineers to sustainability experts.
